The "Not so Instant" Success of Piano Education

Posted by Maggie Fung on Friday, January 9, 2015

In our fast-paced society, receiving instant responses has become the norm. We expect our computer tablets to respond with no delay as we touch the screen, we get impatient waiting on the phone for the next available customer agent.  Are these expectations somehow transferring over to our children as they learn everything from watching us?  Are kids now used to instant success and are less motivated to work hard to achieve something?

In my opinion, piano education is almost like going against the current now a days.  It is getting harder to show parents and children the true value of piano education as it requires many hours of hard work, persistence and at times when it gets difficult, that they still should keep trying (even if it means taking a short break but come back to it).

This is all easier said than done but I truly appreciate the Music For Young Children program as it has given me some tangible goals as a music teacher and great methods to motivate the kids along the way.

I give the most credit to the parents in my classes as some of them have been coming to classes with the kids, in all types of weather situations for the 3rd year now.

Now my son is also turning this 5 and he told me that he will start piano lessons when he is 5.  So now that I put everything in writing, I will need to show him my commitment to his music education too.

Happy 2015!  And hope you all have a great year and if music education is something you want to pursue for your child, let’s have a chat!
